Boom Lifts (Cherry Picker Hire)

JMS modern boom lift range is available for hire across the UK.

Our Cherry Picker Hire fleet includes articulated boom lifts (often called a cherry picker) and telescopic or straight stick booms, all offering excellent outreach over obstacles.

JMS hire electric boom lifts for quiet, emission free operation, diesel boom lifts for external use including rough terrain boom lifts for tough site conditions and bi-energy boom lifts that enable you to operate both indoors and outdoors. Bi-energy booms provide great flexibility in use on site.

We have an extensive supply of the most popular boom lifts such as Genie Boom, Skyjack Booms, JLG booms and Niftylift Height Rider.

For cherry picker or boom lift hire – we’ll have the right platform for your job.

What is a cherry picker?

The term “cherry picker” has become a very common term when referring to types of boom mounted platforms. The name originally derives from the platforms used for fruit picking in orchards where the picker had to get up and over fruit trees without damaging them.
Cherry pickers have a basket (where an operator can safely stand) attached to the end of a hydraulic boom which extends and lifts the basket to the required height.
There are many different types of cherry pickers – electric, diesel, bi-energy, telescopic, tracked and articulated. Some cherry pickers have wheels, others have tracks or are mounted onto the back of trucks.
Whatever type of cherry picker you’re after, JMS has one of the most comprehensive cherry picker hire fleets in the country and can help you work at height safely, whether you’re cleaning windows, putting up signage, erecting steel or maintaining roofing.

What to consider with cherry picker hire

If you need height access “up and over” obstacles, a cherry picker is best suited to the job.

Outreach
When choosing which type of cherry picker you need, it’s important to consider the amount of outreach you need, the location of the work area and the ground conditions. All cherry pickers offer outreach, either in a straight line (telescopic) or up and over (articulated), so be sure to select the one that provides the adequate amount of outreach.

Location
The location where you’ll be working will influence if a cherry picker is suitable. If you can’t position a powered access platform directly under where you need to work or up against the building, cherry pickers can work around these issues.

Ground surface
If the ground surface is uneven, there are steps to negotiate or there are differences in elevation, then spider cherry pickers (also known as tracked boom lifts) are a good choice.

Weight of materials
You need to be sure of the weight of the materials/tools that will be carried up in the basket. All cherry pickers have a maximum safe working load (also known as a platform capacity) which may vary depending on the amount of outreach.

Hire Essentials

When hiring a cherry picker, you may also need to hire the following:

  • Outrigger pads: Aid the stability of the cherry picker when being used on uneven ground.
  • Track mats: Offer effective ground protection to avoid damage by dispersing the weight of the vehicles crossing over them.
  • Harness and lanyard: Essential to reducing the risk of injury and falls when operating a cherry picker.
  • Need an operator?: JMS can provide a qualified cherry picker operator.
  • Need IPAF training?: All IPAF courses available to help you work safely at height.

Secondary Guarding

JMS has always had a policy of purchasing platforms for its access hire fleet with the very best and latest in safety specification.
Every cherry picker purchased in recent years has been fitted with Secondary Guarding as standard. These devices, when activated, help to protect cherry picker operators from injury.
An example of secondary guarding is the JLG Skyguard:

Enhanced Control Panel Protection

Skyguard technology, standard on all JLG cherry pickers, has been developed to stop all functions in use at the time when activated. If the operator comes into contact with the sensor system (the yellow bar shown opposite), the horn sounds and the auto reverse features activates, temporarily reversing the platform to save the operator from being crushed between the platform and obstruction.

The Skyguard technology can be activated from a variety of angles and provides protection without reducing or impeding the work envelope of the cherry picker.

Cherry Picker Manufacturers

Cherry Picker hire from JMS Powered Access

Mast Lifts
Often included in types of low level access, they are a powered access platform that moves up and down a vertical mast. Mast lifts are compact and highly manoeuvrable, making them ideal for operation in restricted spaces where a traditional scissor or boom lift is unable to work.
Rough Terrain
Rough terrain cherry pickers are designed for use on uneven and difficult ground conditions. Typically diesel powered, they are available with articulated or straight booms and often have high gradeability.
Truck Mounted Cherry Pickers
Truck mounted cherry pickers can be driven directly to the worksite enabling them to be used quickly. Unlike larger pieces of equipment, they don’t require a road movement order when moving between sites so can be driven on public highways.

Electric Cherry Pickers
Electric powered cherry pickers have increased in popularity over recent years, as more contractors are needing low emission platforms. Manufacturers have responded and developed ever more powerful electric cherry pickers which can rival diesel booms for height and performance capabilities.
Trailer Mounted Cherry Pickers
Trailer mounted cherry pickers, sometimes called trailer mounts, are boom type access platforms mounted onto a specially designed chassis that can be easily towed and transported to the work site. They are built to be as lightweight and compact as possible, offering an excellent working envelope for their size.
Diesel Cherry Pickers
Cherry Pickers powered by diesel engines are the most powerful type of self propelled cherry pickers. They are usually hired for external jobs and can enable operators to work at huge heights, up to 58.57m. The JMS fleet includes diesel powered spider booms, articulated and telescopic cherry pickers.

Articulated Cherry Pickers
Articulated cherry pickers are ideal for applications where height and outreach are required to gain access up and over obstacles. They are available to hire from JMS in a variety of options to suit your requirements such as electric, diesel, bi-energy and rough terrain. Working heights range from 11.14m up to 52m.
Bi-Energy Cherry Pickers
Bi-energy cherry pickers offer the best of both worlds – emission free battery power for indoor work or in sensitive environments or diesel power for working outdoors where travel across sites is needed. If you need your powered access to be flexible, then bi-energy is a good choice.
Spider Cherry Pickers
Spider cherry pickers are so called thanks to their outrigger configuration which enables the machine load to be evenly spread across the floor. They are propelled using tracks and provide exceptional agility on uneven ground. Spider lifts offer high reach capability whilst retaining narrow travel width, so are ideal for use where access is restricted. JMS supplies a comprehensive range of spider cherry pickers with working heights of 14m up to 52m.

Telescopic Cherry Pickers
Telescopic cherry pickers (also known as straight or stick booms) extend telescopically, allowing you to reach farther and with greater lift capacity than articulated cherry pickers. Working heights range from 15m all the way up to 58.57m. Many have 4 wheel drive to get across tough sites with ease.

Super Booms (30m+)
Super booms is a term used by JMS for cherry pickers that reach over 30m in height. They are usually found on external high level jobs, such as outdoor construction and industrial maintenance. They can reach farther than any other form of self propelled access, offering working heights of 31.80m up to 58.57m.

IPAF Training

JMS offers a comprehensive range of IPAF training courses to help you work safely at height.

The IPAF courses designed for cherry pickers are:
IPAF Static Vertical (1a) – For mast lifts
IPAF Static Boom (1b) – For spider cherry pickers and truck/trailer-mounted cherry pickers
IPAF Mobile Boom Vertical (3b) – For cherry pickers

For more details on the training courses available and to book a course, please contact our training team on 0845 457 0000 or email training@jms.co.uk

IPAF Rental Plus Logo

Most of the IPAF training courses are 1 day courses and teach the skills and considerations needed to operate cherry pickers safely. Courses can be held at one of our IPAF approved training centres or at your premises if the site is suitable.
Upon successful completion of the IPAF course, candidates will be issued a digital IPAF Powered Access licence (PAL) card on the ePAL app. Certifications are valid for up to 5 years, after which the card will expire and the course will need to be taken again.

How much does it cost to hire a cherry picker?

There a number of factors involved in renting / hiring a cherry picker

How long do you want to hire the cherry picker for?

JMS hire cherry pickers from 1 day to over a year.

Longer hire may provide better value (day rate) but you shouldn’t really hire the cherry picker for any longer than you need.

Where do you want the cherry picker?

JMS can arrange for delivery of your cherry picker anywhere in the country. And when you need it off hiring – we’ll pick up the cherry picker from site. Our expert delivery team undertake handovers so you are clear of the controls of the cherry picker. This obviously does not replace the need for adequate IPAF Training (link to training page)

What height, or outreach, do you need your cherry picker to reach?

The taller you need to go, or more specialised access you require, the more you can expect to pay for your cherry picker. It is therefore important you have a good idea of the tasks you need the cherry picker for:

  • How High?
  • How far out?
  • What needs to go to height – How many people and weight of tools and materials?
  • Ground conditions?
  • Access to site?
  • Indoors or outdoors

The JMS Hire checklist provides a useful guide for hiring your cherry picker

Specialist units such as Tracked Cherry Pickers are generally more expensive to hire than standard self-propelled cherry pickers

Make sure your cherry picker hire company is reputable.

It’s nice to make a saving but make sure there are no shortcuts when hiring a cherry picker.

Safety is always important, but t is especially so whilst working at height.

Ask to see cherry picker hire company’s industry accreditations?

Make sure your cherry picker is coming from a company with industry accreditations, ideally fully accredited by IPAF with IPAF Rental Plus

LOLER Inspections – Why we do it

LOLER inspections involve a “thorough examination” of a powered access platform, such as a cherry picker, and are legally required to be done every 6 months. All cherry pickers must comply with LOLER regulations to ensure they are in a safe condition before use.
JMS Powered Access ensure all cherry pickers are inspected, not only during LOLER inspections but also before they are delivered to the customer, as part of the Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI), so our customers can hire with confidence.
