Spotlight On… Tracked Cherry Picker Hire
JMS Powered Access are tracked cherry picker specialists and supply a wide range from leading manufacturers such as Hinowa, Teupen, JLG, OMME and Falcon.
In this month’s Spotlight On, we take a closer look at tracked cherry pickers and why they are such versatile height access platforms.
What is a tracked cherry picker?
Tracked cherry pickers, also known as boom lifts, are boom mounted platforms used for gaining access at height safely and efficiently.
They are mounted on caterpillar type tracks and have an outrigger configuration which looks a little like spider legs, hence why they are also called “spider boom lifts”.
Why choose a tracked cherry picker?
Work sites are becoming ever more demanding, so powered access platforms need to be able to cope with challenging ground conditions and restricted space.
This is where tracked cherry pickers come in.
- Compact and agile – Tracked cherry pickers can fit through standard single and double doorways and can navigate corners and other obstacles that might be present on the worksite.
- Light and gentle – Limited floor load capacity or delicate floor types are a problem for self-propelled cherry pickers as they are heavy and bulky. Tracked cherry pickers benefit from low overall weight and balance under the non-marking rubber tracks. Floors are protected from marks by spreading the weight of the cherry picker via the outriggers. Outriggers can be deployed on different height levels offering the flexibility needed in tight spaces.
- Precise basket positioning – Thanks to its enormous reach and smooth controls, a tracked cherry picker can be driven to exactly where it’s needed.
- Slopes and stairs – These are no problem for a tracked cherry picker. The tracks can be driven on slopes up to a 30% inclination and they even have the ability to climb stairs.

IPAF training for tracked cherry pickers
JMS offers a comprehensive range of IPAF training courses to help you work safely at height.
The IPAF course for tracked cherry pickers is IPAF Static Boom (1b). This course provides the training and essential knowledge to operate self-propelled cherry pickers with outriggers as well as truck/van mounted and trailer mounted cherry pickers.
The course is suitable for all those who operate or supervise the use of powered access equipment.
Upon successful completion of the IPAF Static Boom training course, candidates will receive a digital PAL card via the ePAL app. The PAL card is valid for 5 years, after which the course will need to be retaken.
To book the IPAF Static Boom (1b) training course, call 0345 457 0000 or email the JMS training team: training@jms.co.uk
