IPAF PAL+ Advanced MEWP Operator Training
The IPAF PAL+ Advanced MEWP Operator Training course is an optional, additional one day of category-specific training aimed at operators working in higher risk or challenging environments.
Why Choose PAL+ Training?
PAL+ training is designed for experienced operators who regularly work in challenging environments such as confined spaces, near edges, or on difficult terrain. By completing this advanced course, operators gain specialist knowledge in rescue procedures, load management, and hazard assessment that goes beyond standard PAL qualifications. This enhanced skillset increases operator confidence when tackling complex jobs, reduces the likelihood of accidents, and improves career prospects on demanding sites.
For companies, investing in PAL+ certified operators demonstrates a commitment to safety excellence, helping to secure contracts on projects where advanced qualifications are preferred or required. It also reduces workplace risks, minimises downtime from incidents, and supports regulatory compliance, all while being delivered conveniently through JMS’s in-house training facilities.

Who Should Attend?
This course is ideal for operators working in steelwork, building maintenance, installation projects, or any environment where MEWPs are used in higher-risk conditions. Candidates must hold a current PAL operator qualification in the relevant category (3a or 3b) and have practical experience operating equipment, taking the PAL+ course immediately after basic PAL training is not recommended without gaining operational experience first.
These additions provide clearer benefits for both operators and employers, expand on the technical details of what the course covers, and help potential customers understand whether PAL+ is right for them, all while maintaining the professional, informative tone of the existing JMS content.

Course Information
- If you hold a valid PAL+ qualification, you do not necessarily need a PAL operator qualification for the same category. If you renew your PAL+ qualification, you do not need to renew your original PAL operator qualification when it expires. However, you must hold a valid PAL operator qualification when you originally take the PAL+ course.
- It may not be suitable for inexperienced operators to take the PAL Operator and PAL+ course back to back. To ensure that candidates get the most out of the PAL+ course, sufficient experience in operating equipment is required.
- Upon successful completion of the PAL+ course, candidates will be issued a new digital card showing the relevant categories for which PAL+ was achieved.
- PAL+ covers categories 3a+ (Mobile Vertical) and 3b+ (Mobile Boom), with training conducted on larger machines (minimum 10m scissor lifts or 15m boom lifts) to simulate real-world high-risk scenarios
- The one-day course includes theory sessions, practical exercises, a theory test, practical assessment, and an interview to ensure comprehensive understanding
- Training is available at all JMS branches in Dartford, Harpenden, and Leeds, or can be delivered on-site at your location for convenience
- Operators who successfully complete PAL+ receive a new digital PAL Card with “+” endorsements valid for five years, eliminating the need to renew the original PAL operator qualification separately
How will I receive my IPAF Certification?
Upon successful completion of the IPAF training course, candidates will receive their PAL cards digitally via the ePAL app.
The app is free to download (on Apple iOS and Android devices) and is a convenient way to keep a record of all IPAF licences and qualifications gained.
