Stop Overturns – Stay Safe When Working at Height
At JMS Powered Access, safety is at the heart of everything we do. As one of the UK’s leading access rental companies, we’re committed to helping all our customers work safely and efficiently at height. This month, we’re highlighting a vital safety topic: preventing MEWP (Mobile Elevating Work Platform) overturns.
We’re proud to support the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) and their global “Stop Overturns” campaign. IPAF is the worldwide authority on powered access safety, and their guidance is trusted by professionals everywhere.

Why Do MEWP Overturns Happen?
Overturns are one of the most serious risks when using MEWPs. According to IPAF, the main causes include:
- Improper ground assessment – Soft, uneven, or unstable ground can cause machines to tip.
- Incorrect machine selection – Using the wrong type or size of MEWP for the job.
- Overloading the platform – Exceeding the safe working load.
- Incorrect use of outriggers or stabilisers – Not deploying them correctly or failing to use spreader pads.
- Unsafe operation – Driving or positioning the machine unsafely, especially on slopes or near hazards.
Top Tips to Prevent Overturns
At JMS, we echo IPAF’s advice and encourage all our customers to follow these essential steps:
1. Assess the Ground
- Always check for soft spots, slopes, underground services, or recently filled trenches.
- Use spreader pads under outriggers/stabilisers to distribute weight.
2. Choose the Right MEWP
- Select a machine suitable for your site conditions and task.
- Speak to the JMS team for expert advice on the best model for your needs.
3. Don’t Overload the Platform
- Check the platform’s safe working load (SWL) and never exceed it.
- Account for people, tools, and materials.
4. Use Outriggers and Stabilisers Correctly
- Always deploy outriggers/stabilisers as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Use spreader pads on all surfaces – even if the ground looks firm.
5. Operate Safely
- Only trained and authorised personnel should use MEWPs.
- Never move a boom-type MEWP with the platform elevated unless the manufacturer allows it.
- Avoid operating near slopes, edges, or open excavations.
Remember: Safety Starts with You
IPAF says, “Most MEWP overturns are preventable.” At JMS, we couldn’t agree more. Every operator, supervisor, and site manager has a part to play in keeping worksites safe.
- Get trained: JMS offers IPAF-accredited training for all operators.
- Stay alert: Always follow site rules and manufacturer guidance.
- Ask for help: If you’re unsure about ground conditions or machine selection, our team is here to help.
